The production faced significant challenges, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Patel described using unconventional methods to shoot scenes, including utilizing his phone and GoPros due to equipment failures. Prop shortages also forced the crew to repair broken tables between takes.
The journey to complete “Monkey Man” was far from smooth. Patel recalled moments of crisis when the project faced potential shutdowns, particularly when COVID-19 disrupted plans to film in India. Despite setbacks, the team pivoted to a remote island in Indonesia, where they created a bubble to safely accommodate nearly 500 crew members.
Moreover, Patel had to creatively address casting limitations by incorporating crew members into supporting roles. He emphasized the resourcefulness required to overcome each obstacle, turning challenges into opportunities for innovation.
In addition to the logistical hurdles, Patel himself endured physical strain from the film’s intense action sequences, sustaining several injuries along the way.
“Monkey Man” marks Patel’s feature directorial debut, which he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. The star-studded cast includes Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sharlto Copley, and more.
Produced by Basil Iwanyk and Jordan Peele, the film is set to premiere in theaters on April 5, 2024. Despite the hardships faced during production, Patel’s dedication and resilience shine through, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience for audiences.
