Actress Sridevi‘s ‘English Vinglish‘ remains one of her most beloved movies to date. Her convincing performance as Shashi, a kind-hearted woman striving to learn English in the USA to earn her family’s respect, captured the hearts of audiences.
But did you know that the film was supposed to be made with Aishwarya Rai until he convinced the makers to cast Sridevi instead? Yes, you read it right! Boney Kapoor recently revealed that ‘English Vinglish’ first was planned; Gauri was supposed to do it with Aishwarya Rai, and Balki wanted to do it with Sri in South Indian languages.
In an interview with Zoom, Boney Kapoor mentioned that when ‘English Vinglish’ was initially planned, Gauri Shinde was supposed to direct it with Aishwarya Rai, and Balki had envisioned making it with Sridevi in South Indian languages.
Boney Kapoor added that he persuaded Balki by asking, “Why do you want to do only regional languages with her?” He believed that Sridevi would be perfect for the Hindi version as well, as she would be more convincing in portraying a character who struggles with English.
Kapoor expressed that although Aishwarya Rai had been Miss India, he felt that Sridevi was far more suited for the role than anyone else.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Boney Kapoor is currently preparing for the upcoming release of his production ‘Maidaan,’ featuring Ajay Devgn. “Maidaan” is inspired by the life of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, whose leadership led the Indian football team to victory at the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962. This sports drama is set to hit screens on April 10.
